Considering Outsourcing Internet Marketing Services? Learn about the 3 T's.

Considering Outsourcing Internet Marketing Services?

What to look for in an outsourced internet marketing partner for your small business.

If you're thinking about outsourcing your internet marketing but don't know the first thing about it, consider the following factors before you hire someone.

Are they Trustworthy, and are their results Transparent and Trackable (we'll call it the 3 T's).

Trustworthiness

The internet marketing industry is flooded with people offering ridiculous deals to handle your SEO and Social Media Marketing.  Most of us get 10 emails a day for "$99 SEO" or "SEO services from India, 1st page on Google?"  And that's just from my inbox today. Having worked in this industry for long enough, I have contacted these people to investigate what they are doing.  What I've found is a lot of dated practices, and in this industry, dated is not good.  The perception is that these services are cheap, and any knowledge of how a website works leads to knowledge of how to get business from the internet.

The fact is that virtually none of these companies and virtually no web designers are marketers.  They won't take the time to understand the benefits of your business and develop strategies to take on your market.  Web development modifications have a big place in SEO and internet marketing but it's just the start.  Don't expect results from someone that doesn't take the time to understand your business and how to market your company.

To develop a trusting relationship with an internet marketing contractor, you have to find someone that cares about your success and is asking the right questions about your business.  The goal is to develop the right on-line strategy.

Transparency

Trusting your agency also comes from their ability to offer transparency in their actions.  At Big Step, we maintain a client platform and send monthly reports so that clients can have 24/7 access to all facets of internet marketing reports, rankings, analytics, social, paid advertising and monthly tasks.

Trackablility

Offering a transparent platform leads to trackability, but more importantly, is your internet marketer focused on your results or just rankings?  There are many lead tracking platforms available that track phone calls, contact/quote form submissions and chats.  This is included in monthly programs at Big Step Marketing and should be a part of any program to help understand what is working and improve your marketing efforts.

The internet marketing process involves many stages: Strategy, Web Development and Design, Internet Marketing Mix (SEO, PPC, Social), Conversion Testing, and Analytics.

When you find a partner that you can Trust that offers Transparent, Trackable results for your business, you are probably in the right place.

If you would like more information, call Steve Davey Big Step Marketing at 636.733-0041.

Content Marketing on a Small Budget

Many small businesses think of content marketing as something for the big-budgeted, larger companies that have more resources.

Today, some sort of content marketing program needs to be in the mix for every company.  However small the budget or the willingness to share information about your business is, it's important to find a strategy that works for your company in your market.

A content marketing program demonstrates that you are a lively, trustworthy company to people online and to the search engines alike.  Blogs and social posts don't need to lengthy either.  In fact, for service-orientated companies, they should be concise and stick to your overall marketing strategy.

That strategy should be centered around demonstrating the solutions to the core problem your service provides to your prospective customers.   For example, if your company has been around longer than your competitors and has a good reputation of service, a blog can be as simple as a series of on-going testimonials and case studies.

Content Marketing doesn't need to be painful and expensive, but it does need to be in every company's marketing mix that wants to succeed online.

Contact us at Big Step Marketing if you need help with strategy development and implementation of your internet marketing at 636.733.0041.

2016 Digital Marketing Trends

Video

It's expected that you will start to see an explosion of video ads on the internet. Mobile video ad spending tripled in 2015 (venturebeat.com)! It's only natural that as faster internet speeds become more and more affordable, we seek out content that is easy to consume. This means watching more videos for most people. Look to convert important product and service benefits to video and entertain ways to use that better in your website and marketing plan. Concise videos will become more and more popular, useful, and necessary. Learn more about the benefits of short sales videos.

Mobile vs Desktop
In 2015, mobile traffic overtook desktop. If you don't have a mobile-friendly website, you are behind the curve and your site is likely being punished by the search engines in search results. Your mobile ranking and how your site is set up to convert on mobile devices is a concern. If you're not sure if your site is mobile-friendly, visit our website for more info.

Digital Assistant Search is on the Rise
Apps like SIRI are on the increase and automated, voice-activated search will increase. As this trend continues, it's important to start looking at ways to optimize your website for them including the use of rich snippets, schema tags, citation consistency and growth.

Content and More Content
Companies large and small that don't have a content marketing strategy will likely suffer. Even very small companies need to stay active with blogs and social media posts on past jobs, happy customers and success stories.
Changes in Google

Google's search is rapidly changing. The new local 3 pack (where there often were 7) of results is an increased trend by Google to monetize their search results. They are also doing it in the name of a better mobile return as it fits nicely on a phone or tablet. They are forcing more local small businesses to use Adwords and conduct SEO. This makes these top local spots in the 3 pack even more valuable.

Google has removed the search location option in their settings. For many, it makes it more difficult to see how your really rank in different cities. To get a realistic view on how your website ranks, it's still important to log out of google, clear history and cache, make sure that you are not returning private results. You need to use a ranking tool with location options or anonymous browser by city to get location specific result data now.

Another Penguin update is expected soon and it should continue to punish sites for bad links and link structure. See this Search Engine Land article for more information.
CMS Website Security & Back-Ups

There has been an increase in assault on CMS websites like Joomla and Wordpress because of their open source structure. Standard hosting plans with Big Step or virtually every other hosting platform do not protect you from these attacks. Software is available to help prevent them. You can also attempt to block international traffic if your company doesn't serve those markets. You also should have a website back-up plan in place. Hosting generally includes a 24-48 back-up option only. If your site is hacked or damaged and you don't catch it within that time frame and you don't have another backup, the only backup that exists will be the damaged site. Call Steve or your website host if you have questions or need assistance.
Home Service & Google

Google has dipped it's toe in the water on returning results with a partnership with Home Advisor (formerly Service Magic). It's a controversial move by Google since requiring companies to pay Home Advisor for potentially preferred search space raises concerns in the integrity of their search engine. Nevertheless, in several markets they are showing preferential results of "Home Advisor Approved" companies (companies that pass a simple approval test, pay for an annual Home Advisor subscriptions and agree to a per lead cost). In the process, Google and Home Advisor get paid before you get the lead and the contact is run through Home Advisor first. How consumers react to this test will tell Google whether it's acceptable or not to the market. They may look elsewhere to other search engines or home service sites. Here's an interesting analysis of Home Advisor if you are not familiar with them. Home Advisor is spending a lot of money to gain a strong search presence and recently bought Angie's List. It's an important trend to keep an eye on that could affect search results for service related businesses in 2016.

Internet Marketing Network Comparisons for Medical Research Recruitment.

On-line marketing is often a challenge for Medical Research Marketing Directors looking to expand the reach of their center and produce study participants from the internet.  There are many choices available and many variables.

Here's a quick chart to explore the advantages, disadvantages and estimated costs of several paid networks and how they relate to obtaining organic search engine ranking for your website.

internet marketing options

View As A .PDF

Organic SEO Rank

Optimizing your website so it ranks well on broad based keywords like "volunteering for research" and "paid research" will pay long-term dividends in producing a flow of potential study participants because of it's staying power.  Further optimization on keyword related to your practice helps craft your Research Center and it's Doctors as experts in the field when you rank well.  The amount of time to achieve good ranking varies depending on the strategy, your competition on those keywords, and the state of your website.

Search Advertising

The most targeted is paid search advertising (Google Adwords and Bing/Yahoo Ads) but you can't always be certain of the amount of people showing interest in your specific study medical condition in any given period.  Some degree of more broad search intent should be considered when you create a campaign to help create.  As important as the development of the campaign, keywords and ads are to the success of your campaign, the landing page you send them to is equally as important.  Even small campaigns of just a few hundred dollars make sense to compliment your efforts but it may cost significantly more to see real results.

Display Advertising

Think of display advertising as casting a broader net as it's often used more for branding purposes but you still have the ability to run graphical ads on select sites by keyword webmd.com.

Facebook Advertising

thumbnailfacebookFacebook's interest data is suspect when you attempt to create targeted programs, but Facebook does offer some intriguing options for Medical Research Centers like the ability to boost your study related posts to a much greater audience in your geographic region.  Advertising to friends of your facebook fans also brings a "forced referral" option that can be helpful.  Facebook's popularity can lead to good sharing support of your study opportunities.

The best option is generally a strategic mix of different internet network options to diversify and maximize your budget.

Hyper Local Internet Marketing for Your Small Business

Are you a Small Business Owner trying to figure out why your internet marketing isn't producing for your marketing budget?

It might be a simple case that your budget is spread too thin.  If you have a competitive product or service and you are investing a small ad budget each month (under $2,000 for instance).  There's a good chance you are spreading your budget across too large of an area and into too few internet platforms to make a difference.

Consider a strategy of getting "hyper local" and place your monthly budget into rotating geographic zones across multiple platforms.  If you have a product or service that has mass appeal, you will benefit from the increased impressions and branding of using a hyper local strategy.  If your product or service has more of a niche audience, you can take the same approach if you understand where geographic pockets of your clients reside and work.

The benefits of a hyper local internet marketing approach include:

1) the ability to be more of a large fish in a smaller pond (if even for a short period of time) gives you more impressions.

2) the possibility of a more condensed area of projects if you are in a service industry leading to less drive time.

3) the ability to run more targeted ads and focus on more targeted keywords for those areas may lead to more conversions.

4) there may be added SEO benefits.

The detriments are that:

1) it takes more marketing effort and knowledge of different options.

2) it may take some time to determine what budget will get you the impressions, visitors and conversions you are looking for.

In addition, there may be other direct marketing options like Every Door Direct Mailings (EDDM) that you can use to compliment this strategy and further increase your impressions and branding in targeted areas.

For assistance or a free consultation, call Steve at Big Step Marketing at 636.733.0041.  Learn more about our local SEO programs at http://www.bigstepmarketing.com/digital-marketing/local-seo.

A Fix for Google Analytics Spam - Why Your Analytics Traffic Numbers are Likely Wrong

A Fix for Google Analytics Spam - Why Your Analytics Traffic Numbers are Likely Wrong

Chances are, your Google Analytics Traffic numbers are being greatly distorted by the surge in web crawlers or spider bot programs.  Take a look at your Acquisition | All Traffic | Referrals section of your Analytics.  It's likely that your numbers have been soaring over the past few months.  A look at what source that is driving this "traffic" might include:

free-share-buttons.com

webmaster-traffic.com

buy-cheap-online.info

...or some other Ghost Referral Spam source.  You can usually tell by the name.  That and they will have 100% bounce rate.

Before you panic, this isn't going to penalize you or affect your rankings.  And it's not a security breach of your website.  In most cases, the bogus traffic is never even hitting your site at all.  It's messing with the google tracking mechanism.  However, it messes with your analytics data in sessions, sources and bounce rate distortions, and this can be a real pain when you are reviewing your traffic and making decision.

Google has taken notice and supposedly is working on a global solution, but in the meantime, here are some steps to take to reduce or remove the problem.

1) Log into Analytics.

2) Click "Admin" Up Top.

3) Click "View Settings" in the 3rd Column.

4) Check "Exclude all hits from known bots and spiders" in the "Bot Filtering" Section.

Google Analytics

*** this by itself is not fixing the problem, but is a setting that should be checked as a precaution while Google works on their solution

5) Most Important:  Visit the Google Analytics Solution Gallery and click "Import" on the latest Spam Bot Solution update available.  Don't forget to change the url to your domain in the Segments section per the instructions.

This is something that you'll have to check on a monthly basis since the solution gallery update is only as good as the last wave of spam bot urls listed.  They keep changing, so keep an eye on that Referral Traffic Tab for what is messing up your data.

Happy Spam Hunting!  If you need assistance with this or any digital marketing projects, call or email us.

5 Tips to Better Postcard Marketing Campaigns

5 Tips to Better Postcard Marketing Campaigns

There are few types of marketing that offer the advanced targeting and high impact potential that comes with postcard marketing.  The difference between a successful campaign and an unsuccessful one can come from one of a few factors.   Obviously, the list is the most important part of the program.  A good list is essential to your postcard advertising success, but let's look further.

Here are 5 tips for a more successful postcard marketing program.

1) KISS your design - Keep It Simple Stupid.  b2ap3_thumbnail_lips_20140307-230201_1.png

Too often, mailers want to "get more value" out of their campaign by loading the postcard with extra offers, more benefits.... more clutter.  It's like overtalking on your first date because you're trying to impress.  People aren't going to digest large amounts of information off a postcard.  Stick the key benefits and put your best foot forward.... without scaring them off!

2) Remember where the front of the card is, umm...it's on the back.  b2ap3_thumbnail_arrows.png

The first thing people generally do with mail is look at the address and see who it's delivered to on the address side of the postcard.  This makes the address side the real "front", or the most important side.  You have more room on the other side for details anyway without the address bar and permit space.  You have to catch their interest here, or you're flying fast to the "circular" file.

3) Don't spend too much on printing.

If you're reading this, you may already have settled into postcards as opposed to other fancy alternatives.  However, we've seen many campaigns overspend on an envelope mail piece to try to impress instead of using those funds to get more pieces delivered or increase their number of impressions.  Linen is nice, but unless you're selling an extremely upscale or expensive item, the content is king!  However, consider spending a little more on a postcard piece that's not the cookie cutter sizes.  Most people send 4x6 and 5.5"x8.5" postcards.  These sizes have the best cost per piece in their size range.  If you're sending a standard mail piece above 4x6" size, your postage won't change and you'll be more noticable with a different size piece if your message lends itself well to it.  At Big Step, we have over 30 different postcard sizes available.  Try to make an impact and being different can help.

4) Write a good, concise header and call-to-action line.  attention

These 2 sentences can make or break your success.  Your header needs to be short, inviting and to the point.  Your call-to-action needs to be clear and prominent.

5) Prepare a good sales plan.

Of course we want phone calls but with your web address, don't send them to your home page.  Send them to a targeted landing page specific to your postcard.  Reinforce your message, give them a little more information, and include a contact form.  If they opt-out at that point, make sure your other options are visible - email lists, social media connections, etc.   If you're spending thousands on a postcard marketing program, a few hundred more for a better web presence and a higher closing rate is money well spent.

For information on postcard marketing and advertising programs from Big Step Marketing, call Steve at 636.733.0041.

The Local SEO Landscape in 2014

The Local SEO Landscape in 2014

Most small business owners are aware that the local SEO landscape is changing rapidly, although most aren't aware how much it is changing.  Those that are aware often know because they embraced one SEO tactic that was hot for a while and now has been hit by a Google algorithim change like massive link building, social media bookmarking from abroad, or guest blogging black hat tactics.

What's often skipped and overlooked is good, sound digital marketing strategy for your local SEO

What we stress at Big Step Marketing and JoomlaSEOHelp.com is a return to your strategy and plan rather than any hot tactic.  We b2ap3_thumbnail_seo-strategy-keyword-chart.pngemphasize a well rounded approach, or at least the best approach that will fit in within your budget and goal.  Central to good strategy is organizing your keywords, synonyms, website pages and on-site and off-site local SEO placements (see example diagram).

There are very few "tactics" for your off-site local SEO that won't get abused and then reduced by one of the next Google algorithm changes, which are coming faster and more furious than ever before.

In fact, if someone is evaluating our service against an email offer they received promising 1st page ranking at incredible prices, we try to inform them of the big picture, but the bottom line is that we are probably not a good fit.  They are more interested in the latest gimmick to rise quickly in the rankings.

Most sites weren't designed to rank well, they were often purchased by price or because of appearance, and in almost every one of these cases the website was never set up properly or given a chance to rank as well as it could.

While Google, Bing and Yahoo and the overall landscape changes rapidly, good tried and true SEO won't change:

  1. Create a good strategy with consideration to your goal and budget
  2. Improve your on-site structure
  3. Update your site, blog and make your site relevant
  4. Categorize your pages by popularity, $ value and analyze how the convert.  Improve them.
  5. Connect with local citation sources or the broader market if your national or global
  6. Connect with social media
  7. Conduct smart off-site SEO, no gimmicks

Starting with good strategy and sticking to a sound digital marketing plan will serve you well for years to come, despite how fast the SEO landscape changes.

What's all the Fuss about Google+?

Facebook is so entrenched in so many people's daily or weekly lives, why would anyone consider using Google+, Google's answer to Facebook?  Well, it remains to be seen if they ever will, but Google+

isn't going away, and neither is the fact that Google is the #1 search engine (and it's a runaway, comScore's stats from 4th Quarter last year:  Google 67%, Bing 18%, Yahoo 11%).  So, it's time to saddle up and take a ride on Google+ and make it part of your business communications (even if you don't know anyone on it!).

Landing Page Tips
Just about daily we talk to clients spending hundreds to several thousand a month on marketing without consideration of how well their website landing page converts.  Here's a quick list of things to consider before you insert that landing page link into an SEO or PPC marketing campaign.  Basic yes, but still worthy of a review every time you spend money in digital marketing.

Guest Blogging is Dying?
Guest Blogging is the latest trend to get squashed by Google.  It was abused by too many so they simply put the hammer down on it.  Read more on Matt Cutts's blog, Head of Google's Web Spam Team.  Even still, guest blogging to help craft yourself as an expert in your field and expand your visibility still has value.   Just don't expect it to be the hot trend in ranking success it once was.

Get Your Info from Google's PPC Platform - Even if you don't want to conduct PPC!
Good, free data on choosing your keywords and digital marketing strategy is even harder to come by now that Google has moved almost all keyword data to "Not Provided" in Google Analytics.  Look to the Google Adwords Platform to utilize their tools there that are still providing useful data.

Google's "Free" Adwords Setup
Google has considerably beefed up their customer service team.  Gone are the days (at least temporarily) when you're odds of talking to someone at Google were about as good as hitting the last $300 million Power Ball.  Unlike Facebook, they realize where their money is coming from and they are beefing up support to get the small businessman set-up with an Adwords account.   The trouble is, they aren't going to take the time to do keyword research, ad testing, and negative keyword building that is essential to successful, efficient campaign.  There is no way to set-up a succesful campaign and walk away from it - unless your goal is just donate money to Google.com.  Google will help you use the platform, but using it correctly and strategically is where a PPC Management team comes in.   Google's "Free" setup can cost you a lot in the long run so make sure you either know how to run your program to maximize it's effectiveness or you work with someone that does.

Does Facebook Advertising Work?
We are not big fans of facebook advertising, especially for companies with marketing budgets under $3,000 a month.  However, there is an opportunity on Facebook to run relatively inexpensive, targeted campaigns to help build your brand.  Here is a Business Week article from last quarter debating the effectiveness of Facebook advertising.
